Overview of Health System

In 1997 an Inter-institutional National Health Commission was created to reform the health care system. The Secretariat for Public Health and Social Welfare implements the health care system in three tiers: central, regional, and provincial.

Medical care is both public and private. Due to the lack of supplies and basic medications, those who can afford to do so, avail themselves of the private health case system. Most physicians work in both the public and private sectors, although they prefer to see patients in their private practice.

Private hospitals and clinics are well-equipped and well-staffed with qualified physicians and nursing personnel. Most medical care is available, with the possible exception of surgeries requiring high tech equipment or long periods of recuperation.

Most physicians see themselves as Specialist Physicians. As such, there are few General Practitioners (GPs). To find a basic doctor for your medical needs, you should consult with an Internal Medical Specialist (also called Internist). This doctor will refer you to any other Specialist Physicians you need to see. Most Specialists physicians speak English.

Dental care is often a good value.

The Dominican Republic is known for excellent laparoscopic laser surgery.
