The domestic tourism is one the most appreciated activities on long weekends, for both foreign and local residents. From Santo Domingo you may explore the treasures that have the different regions of the country. In the countryside there are all-inclusive resort hotels, which provide land and water sports, golf, scuba diving, surf and many other activities, plus the opportunity to visit several aquatic parks. In the Southeast we have the famous beaches of Bávaro, Punta Cana, Bayahibe, and the tourist complex of Casa de Campo, world widely renowned for its golf courses. Altos de Chavón is a dream town that will conquer not just your interest but also your soul with its beautiful cobblestone narrow streets perfectly designed as a replica of an Italian or Spanish town four hundred years ago. The North or Cibao region, offers ideal conditions for Windsurfing in Puerto Plata's beaches of Cabarete, Sosúa and Playa Dorada; besides hundreds of kilometers of virgin beaches, perfect ecotourism scenarios such as lagoon "Cri Cri", located in Río San Juan, and important rivers and streams that make the Cibao region the most fertile in the country. "El Pico Duarte", the tallest mountain peak in the Caribbean with 3,087 mts., is part of the "Cordillera Central" near Santiago de Los Caballeros. The peninsula of Samaná, to the northeast, has become the sanctuary winter house of the hunchback whales, which visit our coasts every year to escape from the cold marine waters. The Southwest, although the least-tourist developed region in the country, has great assets for the enjoyment of adventure and ecological tourism. In Baní we have the "Dunas de Baní". It is a small deserted wilderness, full of warm sand and dry wind and at only few steps from a beautiful beach. The "Lago Enriquillo", besides being the biggest lagoon in the Caribbean, has the greater community of American crocodile. The Islands of Beata and Alto Velo in Pedernales, and also Bahía de Las Aguilas, are beautiful sea-shore paradises in the zone. |
