The tourism industry remains stable. The Dominican Ministry of Tourism reported a slight increase of visitors in 2008, despite of the international economic slowdown.

The East Cost (mostly Punta Cana and La Romana) continues to lead the industry receiving the highest number of tourists per year.

The Southwest zone, though less exploited, is developing fast due to its unique natural resources that include Bahía de las Águilas -an impressive beach located in the protected national park of Jaragua.

The country is still the preferred tourist destination in the Caribbean for North America and Europe. Its beautiful beaches, natural resources, ecotourism and mountainous areas, outstanding golf courses and historical sites keep promoting the interest in the country around the world.
