Traditionally the sugarcane production has been one of the main agricultural activities in the country, practiced mostly in the East Region.

Central Romana Corporation Ltd is the biggest refinery, closing the 2006-2007 harvest cycle, with the 64.5% of the National production that totalized 4,964,606 metric tons. Other important refineries are Grupo Vicini (19.9%), Ingenio Barahona (10.1%), Central Pringamosa in Hato Mayor, Central Azucarera Consuelo, Central Azucarera del Este, Consorcio Agroindustrial Cañabrava, Consorcio Azucarero Central and Productor de Caña Orgánica Cruz Verde in Monte Plata. This cycle represented an increment in sugarcane production of 6.2% compared to the previous year. Last year the country imported a total of 91,929 metric tons brown sugar, and exported 214,272 metric tons.

Another important agricultural product is tobacco cultivated mostly in the Northern Region. In 2007 there were 650 million units of Cigars exported mainly to the United States and Europe. The tobacco industry has 6,150 producers and generates 117,000 indirect jobs.

Other agricultural products are fruits and vegetables (cocoa, citrus, banana, pineapple avocado, mango, papaya and passion fruit). Rice, coffee, potatoes, tubers, beans, spices, corn, peanuts, cashews, almonds and macadamia nuts, coconuts, and plantains are also popular exported crops with increasing demand.
